The book The Steel Trap in North America has a chapter on hand forged traps.
It shows pictures of different style pans, springs and the post the jaws
were mounted to.  The jaws did not hook into bent up base plates like modern
traps.   It is an expensive book 75 at amazon.com.   I saw a copy from the
library with inter library loan.
