As far as I got it, it was a plate laid on and welded all around.
Bunch of people, stuff going on, didn't get all the details.

I was surprised nyself that there was no evidence of the m/s giving
underneath the steel and cracking the plates, welds or whatever.

Me, too.  About the 50th blow I struck on my very first anvil, I
missed the work, hit the anvil face and ran a chip of hammer half an
inch up into my hand.  Good lesson, early on.
