[TheForge] Tackle terminology?

Splish splash I was takin' a bath, reading my newest thriller
"Standard Construction Methods" by Underhill.  Lo and behold
I'm perusing the rigging section and what do I come upon but
this:

I was a little surprised to see this.  Has anyone ever heard 
the term "nigger head" applied to a portion of a guy derrick?
Granted, this was published in 1927, but I still found it a
bit unusual.
