To All,
Different concentrations of the same acid will have different etching 
characteristics depending on the concentration and nature of the contaminants.  A 
very deep etch on the end grain seems to imply that it is not of very high 
quality.  You really have to etch a known piece to see what the unknown is all 
about.  The ends do look chiseled off.  It makes sense that if they just punched 
the holes they would have cut the link from bar stock.
