O2 lances have been around for a long time. They were used even in the open
hearth process to drive the carbon down so it could be readjusted in the
ladle. In BOF's the O2 is injected at such a high rate that the lance never
touches the melt. It is also half water cooled and half cooled by the flow of the
O2. EF's have taken over the US market because BOF's are the steel making
furnaces of fully integrated mills where molten pig iron is available. Mini
mills use 100% cold scrap and EF's are the only way to go. The tonnage from the
mini mills is now higher.
