Daniel,
The process you mentioned is one way to do the raindrop. This gives you a
compressed circular form once you grind the surface. You also need to keep
the thickness double so you can then do the same thing from the other side.
Another way is to drill the surface, forge it from the back to press the
circle raindrop out to the front and then do the same to the other side.
This gives you more of the visual raindrop that I think you are seeking.
