The trick I learned for getting a bit if insurance towards clean =
welds=20
through a damascus billet is simple, but non-traditional. Belt grind=20
off all of the scale on the surfaces which will interface. Make the=20
grind lines run across the width of the surface. Then heat it to 6-700=20=
F, just enough to get the flux to start to stick and flux. You have to=20=
allow for more loss in a billet with this method, but I've had more of=20=
my welds come out 'clean' this way.
The more traditional way would be to heat to a cherry color, =
wire=20
brush all of the scale off and then flux quickly.
I think I read this in one of Jim Hrisoulas' books.
