I'm not sure if your looking for faithful examples of contemporary work or
original items. For originals try American Indian Tomahawks by Harold
Peterson, great reference, all black and white, out of print... and rather
hard to find. Pipe Tomahawks and Trade Axes of the American Frontier is
another good reference, good color photos, even has a description which
shows one way of making a pipe hawk, the authors last name is Baldwin, sorry
can't remember the first. Firearms, traps and tools of the mountain men by
Russel shows a number of trade axes and pipe tomahawks. Lots of other great
info., and its relatively inexpensive and easy to find. The Kentucky Rifle
Hunting Pouch by Madison Grant is a good, available reference which shows a
number of bag axes along with the other accoutrements they would have
commonly been carried with.
Lots and lots of originals out there in museums to study, you might also
want to check out one of the organizations I belong to such as The
Contemporary Longrifle Makers Assoc. which specializes in folks who
reproduce artifacts from the 18th/early 19th centuries.
