And I should have explained that fact too.  Indeed, when you have a 
separate light meter, use that.  But so many modern cameras have built-in 
meters that most people have forgotten how to really meter a 
subject.  Using an 18% gray background helps keep the exposure within 
reason.  When I did photography for a living, I used a meter for studio work.

I always shoot transparencies.  That way the lab doesn't chose the 
"correct' exposure for a print instead of me.  If I want prints from the 
transparencies, I use a pro shop that will print as I require.
