I can't recall exactly what they're made of, but I do recall a few things 
that have been said over the years on this list and some things I heard 
from a demonstrator (Robb Gunter?) at a GoM Conference.

They are about 40pts carbon, high wear resistant steel, excellent for 
hammers, hardy tools, set hammers, etc...
