There have been a few of these closed die forging hammers showing up
lately- Somebody on ebay is trying to sell a hybrid Nazel that looks
like a 5B, but is actually a 5 "I", which, as I understand it, is also
a single hit closed die forging hammer. Might be wrong about that one-
its hard to tell much from the pics, but it doesnt look like any nazel
I have seen. Funny looking anvil as well.
This chambersburg is not a traditional blacksmith power hammer- no
treadle, not set up for multiple hits- but there is plenty of power
there to smash hot iron.
I would be interested to know if any blacksmiths are using this style
of closed die forging hammer, and if so what they are making with them.
They are cheap in terms of bang for the buck, and have enormous power,
but require expensive and time consuming fixed dies- more suited to
production runs then one off artworks.
Still I bet somebody somewhere is making some cool stuff using one.
