Double-aught iron is just 1006 or 1008 steel.  Carbon content very low, 6 or
8 points.  It is very good stuff for forging.

In other words in is very low carbon steel -- but not as low as the "pure
iron" of a few years ago.  Anyone can buy 1006 or 1008 steel, the trick is
buying less than a few tons.  Also getting in sizes that are useful to you.

This steel is produce in large volume for several end uses.  In rod and bar
form most of it is headed to nails making.  Rebar tie wire may also be 1006.
It is also produce in sheet form for deep drawing applications.

Want to try some -- buy some very large nails or spikes -- but not the
hardened ones -- which are much higher carbon.
