[TheForge] How did the cross pein hammer come to be the standard?

Know I don't know how the cross pein became the standard. But I do know
that I use the pien on my cross pien hammer quite often. I do have a
diagonal pien hammer that I use the majority of the time, however the cross
pien still gets used when the diagonal isn't quite right. I admit I don't
even own a straight pien hand hammer, so I don't know if I'd use on if I
had it. I do have at least 1 dozen cross pien hand hammers. I have worked
with a striker using a straight pien for spreading material.
