[TheForge] How did the cross pein hammer come to be the standard?

Know I don't know how the cross pein became the standard. But I do know 
that I use the pien on my cross pien hammer quite often.  I do have a 
diagonal pien hammer that I use the majority of the time, however the cross 
pien still gets used when the diagonal isn't quite right.  I admit I don't 
even own a straight pien hand hammer, so I don't know if I'd use on if I 
had it.  I do have at least 1 dozen cross pien hand hammers.  I have worked 
with a striker using a straight pien for spreading material.
