You should be able to save the mail messages as textfiles.  Try 
selecting a message, go to the "File" menu and do "Save As..."

I do not believe that the messages, as they exist on your mail client, 
are stored as text... at least not without a lot of wrapper.  Save As 
should save you a lot of pain in the ass.  You can pplace the message 
anywhere on the machine that you wish.
