[TheForge] OT- for computer geeks

Phlip,

I use Outlook but I do have another computer with Outlook Express 6 up and
running. Here's one way (an easy one) to see those messages locked in a .dbx
file.

1. Open Outlook Express 6. Make sure you have "Folder List" turned on (you
should see a folder tree in a panel on the left side of your screen showing
you Inbox, Outbox, Sent Items, Deleted Items, etc.). If you don't see that,
use the "View" dropdown menu and select "Layout" and then make sure the
"Folder List" box is checked.
2. Right click on "Local Folders" in the folder list, select "New Folder",
and enter a name of your choosing.
3. Now, right click on the folder you just created and select "Properties".
In the window that pops up, you be able to see the location of the file
associated with that window (if it's too long to fit on the screen, and it
probably will be, you can click on the name and scroll across using your
left and right arrows. Make a note of the complete file address.
4. Now copy the .dbx file you are interested in to the same directory as the
folder (actually a .dbx file itself) you just created.
5. Close Outlook Express 6.
6. Delete the file/folder you just created. Rename the .dbx file you are
interested in and give it the same name as the file you just created.
7. Open Outlook Express 6. When you open your new folder, you will now open
and view the .dbx file you are interested in.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

Dan

OK, followed your instructions, and found the .dbx files, but those are just
the folder names. What I need is the actual text files themselves. I know
they're in there somewhere, I had the location saved both on my hard drive
and a piece of paper, but the hard drive died, and the piece of paper went
pfft in my last move.

Any other suggestions?
