Well, yeah, you're right.
Just so I don't sound totally naive...my idea was not that we could
lend production to the total pool. The fact that we could make only a
tiny dent and that the technology is beyond us is irrelevant, maybe a
plus--what Americans do, in the Great American Myth, is take care of
other Americans with determination and their hands. If some media
outlet got hold of the story that a bunch of blacksmiths were doing
what the corporate lackeys weren't, well, it might be that something
would have to happen. Even now, when you get enough people in an
uproar, sometimes things change. Heck, it could even be a charity
thing, donate five bucks and help save a soldier's life. Yep, that
image of the garage in world war two making airplane parts still lives
on. Seems like most of us would be willing to pay a few bucks or make a
little noise to bring a little of that golden era back--and what
politician could stand up and say it was a bad thing?
So as I think about it, it's a media/public relations play at its far
end. Might do a little good with our hammers, but perhaps more by
playing the big guys' game.
Of course, there may not even be a problem and it's probably impossible
to get the thing rolling and it probably wouldn't work if you did. But
it was a thought.
