Jerry,

Before letting the butchers have at you, you may want to try to find a 
good accupuncturist.  It doesn't always work, but everyone I've ever 
known that's gotten the surgery you speak of has expressed regret at 
having done so.  I would try to exhaust all the reasonable alternatives 
before letting anyone cut me.
