[TheForge] Peter Wright anvil

Hi Bob, I have three Peter Wrights from 156 lbs to 428 lbs. They are a
forged base from wrought, and a welded on hard face. Horn and cutting plate
are soft. I feel they are a really good quality anvil that rebound rather
well. Some think they ring a bit - I like that, makes it sound like I'm
doing something.
Might those numbers be swayed to the right a bit and it be a 1 / 2 / 24
? Does it look like 284 or 164 lbs?
I ask because the two larger anvils have so many punch marks on the side
of the numbers that it is hard to read them. It looks as though someone did
punched copper lanterns on the side of them. Someone suggested to me at one
time it might have been to check the hardness of a punch or chisel.......but
that didn't make sense to me it being wrought iron and all. I figured it
was a bored welder with a chipping hammer -as they both came out of a
machine shop where the father started as a blacksmith, and the son who
continued the business was a fabricator...........and impatient as I recall.
The father forged, fabed, machined and built or repaired just about
anything - where the son welded it or threw it out. He found little use for
those "boat anchors" and sold them to me at a rather low price.
I believe you have "traded up" with the aquisition of that tool.
Ralph
