Good question Bill.
I can think of two good reasons from a small operator's perspective.
First and by far the best is safety. On several occasions I've needed to
torch "wrecks." Twisted, bent and otherwise stressed steel structures can
react unpredictably when being cut up so it's really nice to be able to
stand clear and cut fast.
Second is an oxy lance's ability to burn virtually anything, so you can
easily cut non-ferrous for salvage. If you don't mind the risk you can use
an oxy lance to pierce virtually anything, say drill a hole in a boulder. I
don't suggest anybody try using an oxy lance to drill rock, the probability
of a violent explosion as the rock superheats would make the advantages of
renting a proper drill or hiring it out pretty obvious.
Burning concrete produces VIVID orange smoke. <grin>

Wrought iron is.
