If the people you get fire brick and refractory stuff from also do
boiler repair, you might look in their scrap heap from time to time.
I got a steel bowl about 14"-16" in diameter and about 1-1/2" thick
from my supplier, allegedly the end cap torched off some kind of
boiler tube.
