One of my favorite movies, Thief, by Michael Mann, starring James Caan, 
shows the robbers using an oxygen lance to cut open a safe. A scene he 
used again in Heat. Michael Mann is the only filmmaker I have ever seen 
whose crooks use real tools- in Heat, they use a big Milwaukee mag 
drill to drill out a platinum dealers safe, as well as the oxygen 
lance. In Thief, there is a great scene where James Caan uses a 
portable scuba air tank to power an air shear to cut open a piece of 
emt, and then mess with the wiring within. As realistic as any movie I 
have ever seen- usually they either shoot the locks off, or somehow 
magically blow everything open with C-4, or else mysteriously use 
Powerpoint to disable alarms systems, satellites, and nuclear weapons 
control systems.
