Yes, lessons allegedly learned;
Signs..
Well, when we put out our first rough survey stakes, some idealistic 
soul thought to save the place from development and ran off with them.
So I posted a rather official looking sign that read
" Sad Baby Seal-eyes Memorial  Building Foundation"...thinking to 
confuse the issue; and it worked quite well for several years till 
somebody stole the sign.
 I had no idea what it meant really but one day a guy on a $700 bycycle 
looked all sincere and asked me what  it was...I thought furiously and 
said...
That the foundations intent was to take the sad baby harp seals that 
were being clubbed and skinned and bring them here and nurture them. 
Then, as they recovered( pardon) we would carefully take the vast 
amounts fur/hair  that was removed from ladies armpits and bikini lines 
here in CA and transplant it, hair by hair onto the baby harp seals. We 
would end up with an exchange of fur coats and everybody would be happy!
Now, when speaking to tourists, if one uses just the right informative 
tone and cadence and looks concerned, one can say almost anything and 
they'll politely nod...which he did.
Then he asked me if we were with Greenpeace........
In the end, we did, as you suggest, baffle them with bullship and 
outflank them with the PC language of the day...but it took a very long 
time....Pete
