I used T8 lights in my new shop and really like them too. The T stands for
tubular bulb and the number is the number of 1/8 of an inch in diameter. In
other words a T8 lamp is 1 inch in dia. T10 are 1 1/4 dia and T 12 are 1 1/2
dia. The T8 are all electric ballast and that means they have almost no
hum. Also better light output per watt. The max length on T8 is 4 foot but
I put up fixtures that are 8 foot long, 2 sets of 2 lamps in one fixture
with one ballast. I don't think that T 12 are made in electric ballast --
at least I didn't find any. Here is a really good website on Flurorescent
Lamps with complete detail on how to read lamb number, ballast etc.

Murph, where did u buy them? Do the numbers mean anything in particular?

On the fluorescents, get T8 lights. They come in several different types,
each with its own light characteristics. I put them up in my shop recently,
and the difference from the T10's is significant. I got the ones that are
supposed to put out a daylight spectrum, and I really like them. Be sure to
get good reflectors for the mounts; that makes it even better.
