I did not, in fact, find the japanese blacksmiths in tokyo. Japan, for 
the first time, with two kids, was crazy enough without trying to track 
them down. Next time...
I didnt see much in the way of blacksmithing there. Lots of swords, 
beautiful knives, raised vessels, tools, and jewelry.
But there is no tradition of ornamental iron. So there is lots of 
ironwork, but most of it is cast or welded. I only saw one contemporary 
forged fence, in Kyoto, and I am pretty sure it is by Transfer Company. 
It looked like their style.
