[TheForge] OT & IRRELEVANT, but weird.

Well Andy it is neither OT or IRRELEVANT for someone who edits a
blacksmithing newsletter. In fact when you have done the writing it is very
hard to see the mistakes yourself because your brain reads what you meant to
say not what you put down on paper. I have a good proof reader in my wife
otherwise I would be dead as an editor.

Here is some comments about the subject from our last newsletter.

>From your Editor -- We all make mistakes !

I once had a very good young engineer working for me that had the job of
dealing with the special tools needed to service a very large gearbox. Part
of this job required that when the gearbox was reassembled that the case
bolts be torqued to a very specific value. Now this, as I said, was a huge
gearbox - and the case bolts were 3-inch diameter and required a high torque
to establish a preload in the bolts. For this application, the best way to
do this was to use a hydraulic torque wrench. This is a tool that used a
hydraulic cylinder to carefully apply and measure the torque. We could rent
this tool and Jack, the engineer, wrote a letter to the engineering and
maintenance department explaining how this tool was to be used, when it
would be in the plant and when it had to be returned. No big deal, except
Jack called it a "torque wench" about 5 times in the letter. Now most of
your crusty old maintenance guys always wanted to meet a "torque wench" and
there was no way they were going to let Jack live down that letter. Copies
of it keep coming up even 25 years later as Jack is now the engineering
manager over several US plants.

What brings this up? Well, I almost pulled one off about like this with the
newsletter. While I was working on another part of the newsletter, Carol
was proof reading the Ray Spiller article in the other room. Came the
question does "dishing" have a vowel? Or so I heard. I said of course it
has two "i's". No the nurse repeated does "dishing tool" have a bowel? Oh
no, I had typed bowel in about a half a dozen places that I meant to say
bowl. Glad she caught that one !!! It's hell living with a nurse, I love
it. Mistakes such as this are all mine, sorry.
