did you get Krause's booklet yet?
It sounds verbatim to what you are describing and I would concur with him on
the issue you ask; I DON'T use the clamp circuit enough to feel it's a
must-have. He felt it was uneccessary for a home-built and designed it out
of the valve- much simpler. If I need to have something stay put for bending
I use the vise.
I could send you a copy of Mark's booklet but that would not do him justice.
Perhaps someone here can tell you how to get a hold of him.

I might talk to some of the guys building self contained hammers later on in
the design phase. Not surprisingly (for me anyway) I'm looking at a very
different configuration for the hammer itself. The functioning of the thing
though is pretty tried and true over the past century. Also, somebody on
this list tried using a 1/4 turn ball valve on a hammer he was building and
reported it worked just fine, good control but idled with the ram on the
anvil. So I'm not too concerned about making it work, just how many
functions to pack into it.
And, that's why I'm looking for opinions from the guys/gals who use the
things.
