Hey Bruce,
I think you're blowing tubes.
That style anchor had a cast or drop forged shank with a hole in it for the
stock.
The stock was forged with the balls on the end to insure that the stock
couldn't part from the anchor when it was in the stowed position.
Current ships anchors are called "stockless" anchors.
