My daughter and I made a fireplace screen this summer out of 1 1/4 x 3/16
that we riveted together wtih two rivets at the overlapping corners. We
couldn't find much in the way of instructions so we took 1/2 x 1/8 and
whitney punched 3/16 hoes evey 2 - 3 inches and lad the punched pieces on
top of the screen which laid on the 1 1/4 x 3/16 and plug welded the holes
with a wire welder. It turned out beautifully and the screen which was not
stainless survived the welding and was well attached. We also had lots of
questions about replacing the screen, and I plan to be dead before that time
comes.

We bought twice as much screen as we needed and if anyone wants to buy our
unused portion which is enough for one huge fireplace screen let me know.
Its still in the box and has been kept in A/C except for one brief trip out
to the shop to cut what we needed. It measures 36 1/2 x 61 1/2 and you can
have it for $42 plus shipping or I can bring it to our FABA statewide
conference Oct 10, 11, 12 in Blountstown, Fl. We paid $84 for slightly more
than 96". After lots of looking on the web and talking to a few folks we
got 8n, .028" diameter mild steel screen from Universal Wire and Cloth,
Morrisville, PA 19067. Theire phone # is 800 523 0575. As I remember they
didn't have a minimum order. There was a closer wire cloth co. in Tampa,
Fl. but they wanted a $100 minimum order and on the phone weren't very
helpful at all, unlike the other Co.
