The simplest charcoal forge I've seen was used by Tai Goo (NeoTribal
Metalsmiths).
He used a square washtub that was mounted on a stand. I've seen these at
estate sales.
He inserted a 2 inch black pipe through on the side so it rested on the
inside bottom of the tub.
The end stopped in the middle. He then filled it with wood ash, moistened
and packed.
He made a valley perpendicular to the line of the pipe. The mouth of the
pipe was at the bottom
of the valley. At either end of the valley there was a half round notch in
the lip of the tub.
He used real charcoal chunks he bought in 40 lb bags from a restaurant
supply place.
He hooked up a crank blower to the 2 inch pipe to supply the air. I watched
him forge a
loop handled knife from a piece of coil spring with this forge. The most
expensive part of this forge wasa the blower.
