You are right Mike, would have to have a square hole for a chain link
finger -- or as you say it would turn on you.  Unless it has a very shallow
taper and was shrunk in place -- still the hole is too small to take much
load that way -- and would be easy to shear off.

Maybe just modified by some blacksmith that wanted to bolt something on.
(It seemed like a good idea at the time.)  Hey if they get a lot of money
for think would you could get by drilling holes through anvils :-)
