The main difference, Bob is in the screw. A forging press has a long throw, 
and a very coarse thread. Presses I used for die work had a finer 
thread.  Working hot you need to apply the pressure, the forging stroke if 
you will, quickly before the metal cools. Cold die work uses a finer thread 
to apply more pressure, but it takes more turns to apply it, not needing to 
worry about drawing the heat from the metal, or softening your dies
