Heat to about 1600F, cherry red, oil quench or run water onto the face if 
you feel lucky.  Temper to suit your needs.  400F will get you a Rc 50-52 
which is probably too hard for a hammer.  My estimate is to draw to 
blue-gray / gray (600-650)  which should drop it down to about 40Rc.
