I'm sure this is far too simple for you students of higher math ;-) but why
not just drop a plumb bob and measure the amount of lean? That way,, you'll
get an accurate measurement of the amount of deflection, regardless of
whether the post is straight or warped, and without having to rely on
possibly-but-not-absolutely-accurate angular measurements...
