I havent followed this thread so forgive me if I am repeating that already said.

Chain mail, like every other piece of weaponry and armament, could be, and was in places, highly stylized. An armorer in Belgium may have executed things quite differently from one in Germany, who was decidely different from one in Persia. None were either right or wrong, they merely took what they knew and developed a technique that worked for them.

I own some 60 pieces of weaponry dating from the Roman era through Medieval period and the similarities and dissimilarities are intriguing. They were so talented and skilled it is inspiring.

All this is to say, if you are reproducing a chain mail, you could be reproducing something that was very common to say Germany, but uncommon in old Yugoslavia. The British Museum has a large collection and you may go online and peek into their inventory for ideas, or look around in titles in their online bookstore. Have fun!
