I have also heard that in Germany, differentiation was made between smiths
that worked in shipyards/arsenals, smiths that worked solely with horses
making tack and wagon parts and smiths that made "personal" items.  These
latter smiths were referred to as "kunstschmeide."  I asked a German speaker
who told me this term can mean either artist or skilled worker.  I don't
have a definitive answer on the whole question.  Grant
