[TheForge] Yellin Tour Again

The tour was good. No pictures, though.

We saw all the major works mentioned by Clare Yellin in the email I
forwarded (except for that which is inside the buildings). We saw a
number of other works from Jack Andrews' and Magaziner's books. We saw
a few things that I'd bet were Yellin's, but I don't know for sure. I
need to do more research, and that won't be soon. We also got over to
Bryn Mawr, where the ironwork (on one auditorium) was wonderful.

The Rosenbach Museum's exhibit, although small, was very much worth the
trip. Many of the objects on display were "Please Touch". They had a
number of publications, as well as a video (!) of Samuel Yellin
demonstrating blacksmithing. That man was GOOD! He mostly used a
striker, but you should see the economy of motion! I'd'a' started to
believe he really WAS a "devil with a hammer in his hand" if he hadn't,
right there on film, got a punch stuck in a hole, just like us mortals
do.

This was fascinating to Sara, whose grandfather was a friend of Yellin.
The old fellow at the museum seemed quite interested in my
"interpretation" of the (silent) video for Sara, explaining exactly what
Yellin was doing.

I urge anyone nearby or visiting Philly to stop by the Rosenbach, 2010
Delancy St., IIRC. The museum shop is selling Andrews' and Magaziners'
books, some other booklets, and reproductions of some of the smaller
works on display (made by Clare's firm). Dig out Clare's message
(posted here a few weeks back) and visit the other sites she mentions.
The staff at the Packard Building and that at the Inn of Penn are aware
of the ironwork and pictures (respectively) at their buildings.

This was interesting enough to be worth pursuing some more. However, I
don't know when time will permit much.

(If anyone knows of software for creating computerized maps, at various
enlargements, and labeling points of interest on the maps, let me know.
That would speed up significantly the sharing of this information.)
