I had much the same discussion relative to my Bull power hammer with Tom 
Troszak (sp?). The term he used for the 8X8 timbers beneath my hammer 
was " squishy stuff". He was absolutely correct.

That being said. I let my work piece define my hammer and then make sure 
that my anvil is an immovable object relative to the hammer.
