Hey Larry,
I have done a couple of projects for clients with glass.
For fireplaces you have two choices, in my experience. You can use
tempered glass or you can use furnace "glass" which is actually a
ceramic for, guess what furnaces.
Tempered glass is usually the glass of choice. It is cheaper and more
readily available. However it can only be cut with straight lines,
unless you have the glass cut and then tempered.
Furnace glass can be cut in patterns with curves, circles, etc.
The furnace glass I have bought also has a little bit of a bronze tint,
which I actually like.
My local supplier is actually a gasket manufacturer who also sells
micarta, and other neat stuff I use for projects some times.
Pricing here:
A piece of tempered glass, square or rectangle less than 4 sq. ft. is
around $50. A comparable piece of furnace glass is $100.
