Heh.  Don't you wish.  A few years ago I was hanging out at MIT for a
spell annually.  This is a place where it's just *assumed* that
*eveybody* has a PhD or, if you don't, it's because you just don't
want to interrupt your brilliant creativity with such bothersome
hoop-jumping.  People who invented some the technology you take for
granted -- or invented the theory on which it's based -- are wandering
around everywhere.  People who invented the techonolgy you find
unbelievable now but will take for granted in a couple of years are
eating at the next table.  And even there, people who are MacArthur
Felllows get a considerable degree of respect.

It ain't just the money.  This is bigtime recognition of Tom's
accomplishments and his talent.
