Mike,  Thanks for the better article.  Based on this article it would seem
that rather than cast iron as I though the pillar maybe wrought iron and
therefore forged.  If true this is more remarkable that its rust-resistance.
(There are many example of limited surface rusting of real wrought iron
throughout the world.)  If the pillar is in fact wrought iron then not only
is it a forging but it would be made up of many pieces forge welded
together.  Still as I type this I really think it is most likely that this
pillar is in fact "cast" iron rather than "wrought" iron.  They two forms
are often confused in many article on the history of iron and steel that I
have seen.
