Actually, that price is about in line for what they have been going for 
nationally, even in the midwest where blacksmith equipment is 
everywhere. Its not that a double screw vise like that is necessarily 
better than a similarly sized machinist vise, its just that 
blacksmith's really like the way they look. There was one of those 
vises at the Lacrosse Abana conference, at one of the demo stations, 
and it got almost more attention than the demonstrator. The cool 
mechanical look of the sprockets and chains, the construction of the 
chain itself, which is more like an agricultural implement chain than a 
motorcycle chain, and the hefty, solid construction of these vises 
really appeals to the sensibility of the average blacksmith. And there 
arent very many of em out there. I heard there was ONE of them for sale 
at the Quad State, and it sold right away on thursday for 750- this is 
at an event with 6-800 of the savviest, bottom feeding, deal seeking 
blacksmiths in the world, and with probably 500 vices for sale at the 
tailgate sale.
Its not the "collectible" market that is driving the prices of these 
up- it is blacksmiths themselves.
