Bruce:  You might try looking in scrap metal yards for 4140 round.  There is
much of this type laying around that was used for large-bore guns/cannons
and shafts from the WW2 era   In my area, there is a yard that has 30'
lengths of 4140 in 5" diameters.  I would guess that NJ would have similar
stuff.  4140 makes decent hammers when heat-treated properly and it is what
Sid Sudemier uses for the LG dies.  Grant
