If there is a disk in the drive it may be having trouble reading the disk and 
some drives won't open when spinning. Usually the computer will give up on 
the read after a few minuets or so. If the drive light is on, or you hear a 
spinning sound this is most likely the problem. If not, try making a boot floppy 
and boot on that, if the drive still won't open you will know it's not your OS.
It may be that the drive has failed physically somehow and will need to be 
replaced, fortunately CD drives, even CDR, are pretty cheap these days. I would 
give it a long thought before I tried to force the door open, at least be sure 
that the drive isn't spinning.
