Hi Ralph,
When the hammer was rebuilt years ago they had some misalignment in the ram
which was causing the plug to fail. The plug creates the air cushion at the
top of the stroke to stop the upward movement and begin the downward stroke.
The centerline of the plug was now moved over to meet center and now has the
correct clearances. Amazing how small differences can haunt the performance
but it is after all a 'Fluid' power hammer according to Nazel's patents.
The machine shop bored oversize the old plug-hole and then used a bronze
threaded bushing to match the plug I already had made. pretty slick.
The one-piece Nazels are supposedly cast steel, 4140 I believe. I was told
they made them that way to put on ships. I have a hard time imagining life
below decks in a big forge shop with these machines!
This is a late 40's Lobdell according to Bruce. It is a 'light duty' hammer
with a lighter ram (190lbs and 75lb top die) = 265 lbs. The ram is four
sided. I understand some had two sided but I hadn't heard of 6 to 8.
Wow- 3B number 24, huh? That is an early one and probably very well built.
That what I love about these things- no bondo!
The early nazels had different valving schemes that the later models. Did
you get a copy of the Nazel patent off the .gov site yet?
I'll email you a copy if you need them. They are dated 1905 and are probably
very close to what you've got there.
Good luck with your rebuild, Ralph. You know where I am!
Steve

Steve, Very nice. Congradulations.......two years coming must be nice to
have it running.
I see the ID of the ram is trued..........and how about that bronze busing
in the bottom. That is the air cushion and damper correct? Did you braze
and recut that, or press in a new bushing and fit it?
Hadn't seen a once piece 3B either. Mine is definitely an oldie with serial
number 24. I thought the older ones might be one piece. Does this ram have
four, six, or eight sides to it? Is it a Beeche hammer series?, Nazel?. or
Lobdell/Nazel? Mine has the Beeche insignia on the ID tag and is serial
number 24.........and I know it was placed in service in 1910 at a train
repair facility in Boston.
