Good essay. Omits to mention, however, that there are several
interesting metal acetlide compounds. Copper acetylide and silver
acetylide, possibly others. According to a 100 year old general
chemistry text, you can make copper acetylide by bubbling acetylene
slowly through a water solution of copper sulfate (bluestone). The
compound is reputedy highly energetic and very unstable when dry, that
is, explosive and way too sensitive to have any practical value.
