Actually I'd LOVE to see ABANA or some other organization start a NATIONAL
listing for blacksmith classes or tutoring. Only a handful of colleges,
art institutions, and other educational institutions advertise these
courses. But how many more individuals also offer tuition?
So, as long as this topic is open, and since the other gentleman is out in
CA. I'd like to add our classes to the list.
The blacksmithing courses listed below are starting points for students,
and as such they are open ended so the skills learned can be continuously
built upon. The projects listed for each class are typical for most
students taking these classes, but they are not necessarily the only ones.
Since the goal is to gain a series of specific blacksmithing skills, we are
willing to work with students to help them pick projects that not only
further a particular skill but will also be of interest to the student.
Basic Blacksmithing:
- Tuition $30/hr + materials used.
- Students will learn hammer control, tapering, basic curls, shouldering,
riveting, twists, hot cutting, basic metallurgy, safety, tool nomenclature,
simple twists, and general "white" work.
- Typical projects: J-Hook, S-Hook, drive hook, fire poker, candelabra,
tremmel hook, hook plate, crampons, flesh fork, tongs, chisel, & prick punch.
Intermediate Blacksmithing:
- Tuition $30/hr + materials used.
- Students will learn, fine hammer control, scrolling, collaring,
mortis-tennon joinery, forge brazing, fine "white" work, basic tool making,
additional twist styles, practical application of metallurgy, forge welding,
- Typical projects: fireplace tools, froe, draw knife, standing or hanging
chandelier, specialty tongs, anvil tools, simple jigs, basic cutlery.
Blacksmith Shop Time:
- $15/hr + materials used.
- Students may come and use the shop to continue work on their projects or
practice techniques without direct instruction. Instructor will be present
for safety reasons but may be engaged in projects of his/her own.
