I agree with most of what you have to say, but most distributions of LINUX 
are free, including some that can be booted off a CD without changing 
anything about your windows installation on the HD. Installation really is 
pretty painless for most new dists (easier, infact than a scratch install of 
windows) and Open Office will open word and excell files . . .
