I agree. We have gotten the odd request for something big that we've never
made before. But mostly the instant you say "I've never done that", you
can see the wariness enter the customer's eyes.
But I think I'd add that there's more to it than just making lots of new
types of items to sell. You've got to be intimately involved with your own
product line. By this I mean build it for yourself or a close
friend/family member so you can get good HONEST feedback. This is
immensely helpful on 3 counts. First, you've introduced new product for
which you have an example readily available for photos or even
display. Second, any difficulties or design/process modifications can be
corrected and evaluated without confirming that 'wariness' look the
customer gave you. Three, when all is said and done you can say "Sure,
I've done that before!"
