The Metals handbook(available in better libraries) is a good source
for information of this type.. In this case they. if I am
understanding your application, recommend 6F2 or 6G at 341 to 375 HB.
These are non standard low alloy tool steels with a carbon content of
nominal 0.55% The closest AISI standard steel would be 4150 but 6150
or 60 are also similar. In terms of scrap materials Heavy duty
vehicle springs are typically of similar composition.
