John: Ii would recommend H-13 tool steel. It is specially alloyed for this
application and it is a hotwork die steel.
A possible alternative from the junkyard would be stout axles of modern
manufacture. Like H-13, they are often high in nickel, a key component of
shock resistant alloys.
